Doing an ALS intercept for a person not breathing, BLS crew and fire ahead of me. I walk in to find them doing CPR. Family is crying their eyes out, begging them to stop. They have a valid DNR in their hands. They presented it to first EMS on scene who verified it, but decided to disregard it. Did they believe it wasn’t valid? No. Did they think it had been rescinded? No. Did the family ask to revoke it? No. Their reason for starting CPR? “The new guy has never worked a code before. This will be good practice for him”.
Not only no, but FUCK NO!!!! You do NOT have the right to completely disregard the patient’s and family’s express wishes which are legally and appropriately documented and conveyed properly to you just so you can give the new guy some practice. Patient care is NOT about you, it is about the patient. These people are a damned disgrace to this profession. Enjoy the shitstorm I unleashed on you this morning boys. You deserve every bit of it. - NS
